Wat Pa Houak, Phousi Mountain, Luang Prabang

I have often seen this little temple at the base of the hill to the famous Phousi mountain. Phousi mountain is right in the middle of town and a popular place for tourists. There is a 150m walk to the top, a favourite spot for watching the sunset over a beautiful Luang Prabang.

From the summit you can enjoy a spectacular 360 degree outlook across the city and its many temples, and out over the surrounding landscape to the mountains in the distance. That is for another time…

I had overlooked Wat Pa Houak for 5 years, 7 years if you count from my first trip to Laos, despite walking past it at least a few times per week. Last week on a blistering hot afternoon I had nothing better to do than going for a walk. Every time I discover something new or make an effort to do so. So I ventured up the short steps to Wat Pa Houak.

I was amazed to see such an old and stunning mural on the back wall of the temple. With the small windows letting in sunlight it made for a wonderful photo. And looking right opposite you get a great view of Haw Pha Bang royal temple from this elevated position.

It was an enjoyable little stroll and I hope to bring you more little sights of Luang Prabang as I snap them on my walks around town.
