What does teaching computing do to reduce poverty?

Laos is one of the poorest countries in the world. It has been proven that to drag a country out of its poverty, people must be educated. There are a number of education facilities in Laos and both Government run and private.

The Lao education system is improving slowly and making good progress. The South Korean government has built and equipped a University in Luang Prabang. Many programmes require students to use the Internet and therefore they need to understand how to use a computer, the internet and also English.

This is why I spend time in Laos training local Lao teachers how to teach computing and internet to Lao students . I support a charity school that reaches approx 300 students every day. These students are between 16 and 25 and attend their normal high school, university or monk school during the day and come to study English and computing as a time that fits with their schedule.

The aim is to equip them so they excel in their studies, gain better employment and are able to support themselves, their family and community. It’s hard work but very rewarding. The volunteers, teachers and students are amazing to work with.

If you would like to get involved and support this cause you can join up or support this cause.
