Exploring Ban Xieng Lom & 300 million years of prehistory

25 Sep , 2025

This week, some of the team and I ventured out 30 mins from Luang Prabang to explore the village of Xieng Lom.

Château Oriental serves as a sanctuary in which to unwind and relax both body & soul in a picturesque riverside location along the Nam Khan River near Luang Prabang. This boutique retreat offers an intimate escape where they can immerse themselves in the tranquil rhythms of riverside life, surrounded by lush tropical gardens and the gentle sounds of flowing water. We went to see the trekking, e-bike riding, elephants and the cave,

The “Ghost Valley” an area bought in recent years to protect the land from slash and burn and replant it has over 300 million years of prehistory, featuring a spectacular valley with a mysterious cave discovered by the founder, Mr Markus in 2001. You can explore this fascinating area through single-day or multi-day guided excursions, whether by e-bike, hiking.

Lao Spirit Resort

Along the river is Lao Spirit Resort offering intimate traditional huts nestled in lush forest, along the bank of the Nam Khan river. With only seven accommodations to preserve an atmosphere of complete tranquility and privacy. This eco-conscious retreat is designed to honor traditional Lao building techniques and materials, creating authentic experiences that connect guests directly with the natural environment and local culture. The resort’s philosophy emphasizes mindful living and spiritual wellness, offering activities such as meditation sessions, traditional craft workshops, and guided nature walks that allow visitors to engage deeply with Laotian traditions.

Zen Namkhan Resort

Zen Namkhan Resort is a unique wellness destination that balances spiritual contemplation with sensory enjoyment. Guests can participate in sunrise yoga sessions, traditional blessing ceremonies, and artisanal cooking classes, all while enjoying the resort’s commitment to sustainable tourism and cultural preservation in one of Southeast Asia’s most spiritually significant destinations.

Next to Château Oriental is a new restaurant run by a lovely Lao/Australian lady who makes meat pies for Buffalo. Yum
