I joined in a visit to a remote village school to take them books. The Luang Prabang libary runs a book bag program at the library on the night market street. People can purchase books and put them in a bag and when there are enough they are taken to a village.

The books are for children from 3 – 18 years old and in Lao, English and some in Chinese.

We spent 2 hours in a van to drive to a nearby town where we loaded up with extra supplies and boarded a local tractor. We spent a further two hours on the tractor driving slowly across bumbpy uneven terrain to reach the remote village. I wasn’t looking forward to the return trip very much.

Library staff bring hygiene posers to the village school and run a session on hygiene for school students and play fun games with students. They give school supplies to students such as pens and writing books as well as soap and toothbrushes.

We give play equipment to students and a lucky few get the small number of new shirts or shirts that are available. Many more students would benefit if there were more, as most of the uniforms were very worn and dirty.

When students choose a book each, they were incredibly happy. Every student quickly found somewhere to sit (or stand) and read their new book. I have never seen so many children so engaged in reading and it was lovely to see.

It is a wonderful project and so important to help get much-needed books into remote schools. The library and local schools can always do with more books. You can sponsor a book bag and join in a tuk tuk trip with the library. The cost is USD $300.
