Nong Jung: No Laos tourist trap

18 Dec , 2024

If you’re looking to experience a more authentic side of Luang Prabang, head to Nong Jung Bar. This isn’t your typical tourist trap; it’s a local hangout with a laid-back vibe and the usual local selection of drinks (mainly beer) and local Lao food.

The atmosphere is super chill, with low-key music. It’s set around a lake. You are likely the non-Lao to be there and it would be handy to know some locals as the menu is in Lao and staff don’t speak English. But it’s the perfect spot to unwind after a long day with your Lao mates.

Pre-COVID and before, Luang Prabang had many local Lao beer bars, maybe that’s for another blog. These basic, charming places consisted of a wooden floor, open walls, tin roofs and not the freshest smelling toilets. However, they were meeting places where people relaxed. Sadly over the past 5 years, most of these have gone and turned into glass-fronted enclosed places, been changed into something more upmarket or just gone completely as some as simply vacant land now.

So it’s great to see Nong Jun lasting the test of time and giving us somewhere local to go to enjoy a catchup with friends – and some hot and spicy food!
