I helped out a small class of eager high school students with their English lessons last week. During the high school break, these students are taking a holiday class to improve their English skills. They go a small school set up in someone’s home in the center of Luang Prabang where two small classes of about 20 students are run each morning of the week. For a small fee, they get a teacher who is dedicated to teaching quality English classes.
Most of the students were 13 to 18 years old and most with surprisingly good English ability. I asked them questions such as their name, where did they come from and how long they had been learning English, some for only a few months. That put my Lao learning progress to shame.
We spend the latter part of the lessons working through a conversation script, assisting with their pronunciation and explaining phrases such as ‘across the street’ and how to help someone with instructions to get to the airport.
