This lovely photo was taken on the Mekong River in Luang Prabang before I was fortunate to be able to get away for 2 days to Nong Khiaw about 3 hours North Fron Luang Prabang.
Children playing catch me on the Nam Ou river
Nong Khiaw is a very small town divided by a bridge. It is very beautiful and most people take a traditional long boat or kayak up the Nam Ou river. I passed many mist-covered limestone mountains and it gave a sense of serenity and calmness as I cruised along slowly. I passed local villages where I saw people going about their daily duties or playing in the water.
Water Buffalo on the Nam Ou
Water Buffalo take the opportunity to laze around and wash in the river too. After about 30 minutes I arrived at Muang Ngoi village. I was here 6 years ago and it has since become quite a tourist haven with many restaurants and cafes set up along the dusty road that cuts through the town.
Muang Ngoi village
Muang Ngoi is a stunning setting surrounded by towering mountains. There is a cave nearby to visit and a number of walks. Of course, kayaking on the river is a popular choice. Upriver further is a weaving village which is worth a trip I am told but time was very limited. I met some tourists who couldn’t get a boat, so they joined mine and we returned towards Nong Khiaw where I visited another small village and walked the last hour alongside the Nam Ou to Nong Khiaw.
