Officials in Luang Prabang are planning to build an 80-kilometre ring road and a new bridge over the Mekong River to help ease traffic problems. A contract was recently signed with a local company, Saisamphan Chanmavong, to carry out a study on the project’s design and potential effects.
The agreement, signed on September 9, covers everything from surveying and design to cost estimates and environmental and social impact assessments. The proposed ring road will go around Luang Prabang city and the Chomphet district.
According to provincial authorities, the new road will offer a much-needed alternative to the city’s small, congested streets. Experts have warned that without a bypass, traffic could become a serious problem in the next 20 to 50 years.
Early reports suggest that some existing roads could be used for the route, but new sections will be needed. These will include a new link to the Kuang Xi waterfall and a bridge across the Mekong to connect with National Road No. 13 North. The entire study and design work are expected to be finished within a year.
