Enjoying the Mekong River in Laos
Over January I got the chance to enjoy a taste of life on the Mekong River a few times.
The first was to take the dogs out for a trip with my friend past cucumber island to the island near the new China-Laos railway bridge. It was the most relaxing day I have had in a long time. Rosie is great on boats and enjoy a mad run around the sand island.
In Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in northern Laos, the Mekong River is a major attraction and a key element of the city’s landscape and culture.
The Mekong River is particularly important to Luang Prabang because it plays a vital role in the daily lives of the local people. The river provides a source of water for irrigation, fishing, and transportation, and it is also an important spiritual and cultural symbol.
One of the best ways to experience the Mekong River in Luang Prabang is to take a boat trip like this. People usually take a slow boat upstream to the Pak Ou Caves, a popular tourist destination that is home to thousands of Buddha statues.
We enjoyed beautiful sunsets.
Over the course of the month, I got to enjoy the river four other times. I went camping with friends overnight on the sand island. On another occasion, we joined people on the SaSa boat which does Sunset Cruises every evening on the Mekong from about 5pm for 2 hours.
